Papyrus, the paper of the pharaohs

Papyrus let "pa-per aa" in ancient Egypt. The translation is quite simple: the pharaoh owned the monopoly for the production of papyrus, hence the word is composed of "pa" (possession) and "peraa" (pharaoh).
The production of papyrus is still comparable to the work in Pharaonic times. Greeks and Romans learned about papyrus from the Egyptians and introduced it to Europe. There it was widespread until the 2nd century AD. Later, they switched to using the paper that had come to Europe from China.
