Fresnel lenses (“leaf magnifiers”) are strong like solid lenses, but light and flat like paper. In 1821 the French physicist A. L. Fresnel invented a completely flat lens. Its surface is provided with concentric prismatic grooves which ensure the collection or diffusion of light. Its stunning optical effect exerts a strong fascination. Today they are used, for example, in spotlights and lighthouses.
